Master of Wine:
Three typical aromas of South African wines
This is what South Africa tastes like: three aromas in your glass
For our Master of Wine, Richard Bampfield, there is hardly any wine region that can compete with the beauty of South Africa. Three grape varieties have made a name for themselves worldwide.
The favourite from Paarl and Stellenbosch
The powerful red wines of the Shiraz grape taste of plum, blackberry, black cherry and pepper, or of wide open spaces, wind and a little bit of adventure. The aromas are brought out particularly well in wooden barrels.
Steen: South Africa's Signature White
Order a Steen in South Africa and you'll be served a Chenin Blanc – a wine as refreshing as a dip in cool water. Depending on how it's aged – in oak barrels or stainless steel tanks – it develops either floral or nutty nuances.
Tastes like summer on the Western Cape
Sauvignon Blanc is grown and loved all over the world. On the Western Cape, it has a particularly unique taste – of sand between your toes, warm skin and a summer that, for a moment, lasts forever.
Recipe: Grilled Trout with Asparagus Salad
Spring on a plate! Tender grilled trout meets crisp asparagus salad. Light, fresh and just right for sunny days. Herbs, delicate roasted aromas and a splash of citrus add that special something. What's in your glass should be just as lively: serve with a lightly chilled Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Riesling. Cheers!
