Lidl's 'Go Full Lidl' campaign advertises more for less with full shopping carts.

Firstly, we do our shop in Lidl and include all the bits and bobs of an average family’s shop e.g. spuds, milk, bread, fruit, veg, chicken fillets, mince, pasta and even, bin bags.

Then we head over to a Tesco store and select like-for-like products based on the following criteria: weight, quality, brand (private label, premium private label or branded) and price.

Ooooh, pro-rata is a very fancy Latin term for “in proportion”. It’s used to give the value of something (a Lidl product) in proportion to something else (a similar Tesco product).

For example: In Lidl, our 250g packet of Sunflower Seeds is £1.25. The comparable product in Tesco is their 300g packet of Sunflower Seeds for £3.00. The pro-rata considers the difference in weights and works out the price of the Tesco Sunflower Seeds as if it was a 250g product. This calculation shows that 250g of Sunflower Seeds in Tesco would be £2.50, whereas at Lidl it is only £1.25 – so you’re far better off shopping at Lidl!

We complete comparison shops frequently to ensure our advertising is accurate. You can find the dates of the shop, both on this webpage below on the PDF files of product lists & receipts.

To do it fairly we make sure both shops are completed on the same day at Lidl, Buttercrane Newry & Tesco Extra, Downshire Road, Newry.

Keep on scrolling. All substantiation information with full comparison shop details is just down the page. Happy reading. And more importantly, happy saving!

For all completed shops, we have scanned both Tesco Clubcard & the Lidl Plus app at the till.

Similar to how we use pro-rata pricing across all products. In fairness, we also pro-rata Clubcard savings. For example, on the 15th July, Tesco’s Organic Fairtrade Bananas (5 pack) were on Clubcard for £1.30. However, once we used pro-rata pricing against Lidl’s Organic Fairtrade Bananas (6 pack), the Tesco price stood at £1.56.

Therefore, using the same pro-rata logic, this would increase the Tesco Clubcard saving from 20p to 24p. Which is displayed at the end of each product list on this webpage.

All prices recorded with respect to both shops reflect a single-item price and may not reflect potential savings where items are offered as part of a multi-buy promotion. This rule has been applied to all comparison shops.
