Ok, you know how there’s More To Value when you shop at Lidl? Well, we make sure for your sake (and ours!) that our value and prices are always better than the rest. So, very often, we do a big shop somewhere else. In the name of science, we head to Tesco and do the same shop for the same or similar products. Then we compare receipts to make sure that Lidl is always the BEST value.
Favourably! Oh, we see what you mean. Firstly, we do our shop in Lidl and include all the bits and bobs of an average family’s shop e.g. bread, milk, fruit, veg, meat, cleaning supplies and all the staples.
Then we head over to Tesco and find the most similar products based on the following criteria: weight, quality, brand (private label, premium private label or branded) and price. We take all that into account and then choose the most comparable product the other retailers had on sale that day. This is the fairest way of comparing the shop based on a real consumer experience.
Ooooh, pro-rata is a very fancy Latin term for “in proportion”. It’s used to give the value of something (a Lidl product) in proportion to something else (a similar Tesco product).
For example: In Lidl, our 350g Deluxe Chilli & Tomato Pasta Sauce is £1.79. The comparable product in Tesco is their 340g Tesco Finest Chilli & Tomato Pasta Sauce for £2.10. The pro-rata takes into account the difference in weights and works out the price of the Tesco Pasta Sauce as if it was a 350g product. This calculation shows that 350g of Tesco Finest Chilli & Tomato Pasta Sauce would be £2.16, whereas at Lidl it is only £1.79 – so you’re far better off shopping at Lidl!
Our latest and final round of shops was conducted on January 6th, 2026. To do it fairly we make sure all shops are completed on the same day at Lidl and Tesco stores in Newry.
