Right, so, you know how we recommend you Go Full Lidl for the best prices? We need to make sure for your sake (and ours!) that our prices are always lower than some of the bigger boys! What we do is, we go around another supermarket (undercover, trench coats, fake moustaches, all that craic) and do the same shop for the same or similar products for a family of four. Then we compare receipts to make sure that Lidl is the BEST value! And, yep, you can check the receipts so you know we’re not pulling your leg!

Ooooh, pro rata is a very fancy Latin term for “in proportion”. It’s used to give the value of something (a Lidl product) in proportion to something else (a similar Tesco product). For example:

Lidl’s Beef Lasagne is a 1000g lasagne for £3.99. The most easily comparable product in Tesco is a 1500g lasagne for £7.90. The pro rata takes into account the difference in weights and works out the price of the Tesco product as if it was a 1000g product. Ya get me? This calculation shows that a 1000g lasagne in Tesco would cost £5.27, whereas at Lidl it was only £3.99 – so you’re far better off shopping at Lidl!

We do them every month but the location of the stores change (so our spies don’t get recognised…jokes). To do it fairly, we make sure both shops are completed on the same day. The most recent one was on 23rd December at Lidl and Tesco stores in Derry~Londonderry. The next one will take place on Thursday the…ah no we don’t think we’ll be telling ye that, just in case there are any @SneakyTescoPricers reading this ;0)

Favourably! Oh, we see what you mean. Firstly, we did our shop in Lidl and included all the bits and bobs of an average family’s weekly shop e.g. spuds, milk, bread, fruit, chicken fillets, beef mince, pasta, soda bread, all the staples!

Then we headed over to Tesco and found the most similar products based on the following criteria: weight, quality, brand (private label, premium private label or branded) and price. We took all that into account and then chose the most comparable product that Tesco had on sale that day.
